Background of the Study
Educational discourse is fundamental to effective teaching and learning, particularly in higher education. University seminars in Nigeria provide a forum for academic debate, knowledge sharing, and critical inquiry. Pragmatic coherence, which refers to the logical and contextually appropriate organization of discourse, is essential in these settings to ensure that ideas are communicated clearly and persuasively (Ibrahim, 2023). This study examines the pragmatic coherence of university seminars by analyzing the language used by lecturers and students during academic discussions. It focuses on discourse markers, turn-taking strategies, and the use of clarificatory statements that contribute to a coherent flow of ideas. In a diverse academic environment, where participants come from varied linguistic backgrounds, maintaining pragmatic coherence is critical for mutual understanding and effective knowledge transfer. The research will involve the analysis of recorded seminar sessions from selected Nigerian universities, identifying both strengths and areas for improvement in academic communication. The findings are expected to offer insights that can be used to enhance teaching methodologies and promote better student engagement and comprehension (Ibrahim, 2023; Olatunde, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the importance of pragmatic coherence in educational discourse, there is limited research focusing on its manifestation in Nigerian university seminars. Existing studies have predominantly examined content and theoretical frameworks without delving into the pragmatic aspects that facilitate coherent communication in academic settings. This gap hampers efforts to improve seminar effectiveness and student participation. Incoherent discourse can lead to misunderstandings, reduced engagement, and a diminished learning experience. Therefore, there is a critical need to investigate the pragmatic strategies that underpin coherent academic discourse in university seminars. This study addresses this gap by analyzing recorded seminar sessions to identify key pragmatic markers and propose strategies for enhancing communication clarity and coherence (Ibrahim, 2023; Olatunde, 2024).
